What is a facial scrub?

A facial peel is a procedure derived from the English verb "peeling" or "peel off". In this process the "old" epidermis cells are peeled off and the formation of new cells is stimulated

Peeling always means skin damage as a signal for regeneration. Although in recent years a number of new technological methods have emerged to "damage" the skin and initiate the renewal process (e.g. laser), peelings with chemical acids are still popular. They are well researched, can be combined by individual choice of composition and concentration and achieve a variety of cosmetic effects.

Indications for facial peels

The indications for facial peels are:

- Problematic skin (increased oiliness, blackheads, acne);

- tired, sallow skin;

- Photo- and chrono-aging (wrinkles, loss of firmness, deterioration of relief and complexion);

- Scars, scars, acne scars (post-acne);

- Pigmentation spots.

Only a specialist can figure out which type of peel is right for your skin. Although facial peels are a solution to aesthetic problems at a young age, from the age of 35 they often become a routine measure as part of an anti-aging therapy, because the natural self-renewal processes of the facial skin gradually slow down and a professional chemical facial peel can stimulate them very actively.

Result after professional facial peelings

Rehabilitation after a professional facial peeling in the clinic can last from 1 day to a week, depending on the depth of treatment, but the result is remarkable

Smoother, fresher and well hydrated skin. The young skin cells of the face provide the natural moisturizing factor to achieve a better surface

Reduction of deep wrinkles and elimination of fine lines, scars, post-acne, pigmentation spots as superficial damage and imperfections are removed with the peel along with the outer layer of the face

The skin determines the elasticity and firmness of the skin and the clarity of the facial contours. This is due to the "awakening" and activation of young skin cells, which can better cope with these functions.

Advantages and disadvantages of peelings

Facial peels in general, and chemical peels in particular, are considered almost a panacea for all aesthetic problems and are valued for their ability to literally transform the skin, but success depends on the properly chosen acid composition and the properly planned course

So, the undisputed benefits of peels can include:

- a wide range of application areas;

- High effectiveness (when the method is properly applied to the skin);

- a clear mechanism of action;

- the peeling method has been abundantly studied

Disadvantages of peelings

- The inevitable redness and flaking of the skin, discomfort that almost always accompany peels.

- May require a fairly long rehabilitation period (up to a week).

- Possible side effects are usually associated with violations of the technology of the procedure: Acne after peeling, difficulty in exfoliation of the stratum corneum, the subsequent tendency to hyperpigmentation.

- Influence of the human factor. The final result on the face, as well as the duration of rehabilitation after peeling and possible side effects depend on the competence of the specialist.

Types peels

Depending on the depth of the damage to the epidermis, there are three types of facial peels

1. superficial

2. central

3. deep

The lower the pH of the solution and the higher its concentration, the stronger the peeling effect. This means that the peeling effect is longer and stronger, i.e. the result is more visible

The less the skin reacts, the softer the effect (redness, feeling of tightness, peeling) and the shorter the recovery period is. But the cosmetic effect on the face is also less impressive. However, this does not mean that the best peels are also the most aggressive ones. It depends on the indications and individual characteristics of the skin of the face.

Superficial facial peels

This is the lightest form of peeling, which only damages the horny layer of the skin and causes a light exfoliation of the face. Fruit acids are excellent for this task, the best known is glycolic acid

For problem skin, where the natural process of exfoliating keratinized cells slows down, a glycolic peel can help. The function of glycolic acid is to speed up this process in combination with salicylic acid:

- to open the sebaceous glands;

- to lighten blemishes;

- To prevent rashes and minimize post-acne.

Glycolic acid's main competitor is the more active malonic acid. Exfoliating with it closes pores well and is suitable for thicker skin.

Medium face peeling

This is the lightest form of peeling, which only damages the horny layer of the skin and causes a light exfoliation of the face. Fruit acids are excellent for this task, the best known is glycolic acid

For problem skin, where the natural process of exfoliating keratinized cells slows down, a glycolic peel can help. The function of glycolic acid is to speed up this process in combination with salicylic acid:

- to open the sebaceous glands;

- to lighten blemishes;

- To prevent rashes and minimize post-acne.

Glycolic acid's main competitor is the more active malonic acid. Exfoliating with it closes pores well and is suitable for thicker skin.

With the medium facial peel, you can:

- improve the quality and color of the skin;

- even out skin texture and improve skin firmness;

- reduce the depth of wrinkles.

Professional deep facial peels

This type of facial peel removes the entire epidermal layer of the facial skin and is a serious and traumatic operation

The chemical agent used is phenol. The result is basic and permanent if it goes through positively. But there are not many doctors who perform this type of deep peel, and even fewer patients do, and there are safer, non-toxic alternatives like lasers for facial skin.

More recommendations for skin care

The best advice for your skin is given by the doctor, who will tailor a regimen and peel to suit the patient and their facial skin, but general rules of conduct apply for the period after the procedure

- Avoid being in the sun after the facial peel and do not go outside in any weather without first applying a cream with the highest possible SPF

- After the peel, ensure strict hygiene, sleep on clean pillowcases and do not touch the skin even with clean hands

- Clean your face and wash it only with the products recommended by your doctor

- Use specially formulated skin care products for gentle exfoliation and skin regeneration

- Do not touch the crusts that form after a facial peel. If they do not fall off by themselves, it means that the regeneration process is not yet complete.
