Wound healing through PRP therapy

PRP therapy for wound healing

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy has proven effective for a variety of medical and cosmetic problems. You probably know athletes like Kobe Bryant and Tiger Woods PRP who used PRP for sports injuries. Doctors are constantly researching PRP and have managed to find new uses for the treatment. One of these is PRP therapy for wound healing.

Doctors have been using PRP for some time to heal dental wounds

Since the development of the treatment, doctors have used PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) in dental care to speed healing after tooth extraction and root canal treatments. Dentists have also found that by placing serum in the oral cavity, they can stimulate the formation of tissue and bone so that dental implants can take root more effectively. PRP wound therapy is an extension of this treatment application.

It is now possible to induce wound healing with small scars. All types of wounds, including diabetic ulcers, surgical procedures and pressure ulcers or eyelashes, respond well to PRP treatments.

Understanding the body's natural healing mechanism

Every time you have a wound, the body takes action to heal it. Normally, the healing process takes place in four phases.

Haemostasis: At this stage, bleeding from the wound is stopped.  At the site of the injury, the blood changes from a liquid to a gel. The damaged vessels close to prevent further blood loss from the wound.

Inflammation: The body's healing mechanism begins with the release of chemicals in the wound. These chemicals cause swelling around the wound and redness. You will also feel pain and heat in the wound. If the wound is severe, your body will raise the temperature to fight off any pathogens or bacteria that may have entered the wound.

Dispersion: At this point, the body begins to produce new tissue by concentrating collagen and other growth factors in the area. New blood vessels are formed that deliver nutrients and oxygen to support healing.

Maturation: Skin emerges from the wound. However, depending on the severity of the injury, it takes longer for the inner tissue to heal completely. The maturation phase can take a long time and you still need to treat the injury.

Understand the role of PRP therapy in wound healing

The serum used in PRP treatment is the concentration of substances used by the body in the healing process. Each component in the plasma is naturally designed to provide all the necessary elements for the healing process. Therefore, PRP treatment is very effective for wound healing.

  • Thromboxanes are cells that help blood clot by stopping blood flow and forming blood clots.
  • Serotonin also works against bleeding and relieves some of the pain you have.
  • Remedies activate the thrombin in the plasma so that it forms a glue or clot to close the wound.
  • Growth factors that include fibroblasts and keratinocytes: Fibroblasts are the cells that make up the tissue and collagen scaffold, while keratinocytes form the outer layer of the skin.
  • Cytokines are proteins that attract large numbers of white blood cells to the wound, protecting it from infection. Cytokines also send signals to tissue repair cells, instructing them to heal.
  • Platelets are another type of protein that kills harmful bacteria that can cause infections.
  • Plasmaproteases cleanse the tissue around the wound so that a new frame can be replaced.

Why use PRP therapy for injuries

During PRP preparation, a small amount of blood is taken from the patient's forearm. Doctors isolate the plasma with a centrifuge. Then they put the concentration of growth factors and other repair agents into the wound.

Normally, blood has growth factors for healing, but these agents are present in smaller amounts. The PRP serum greatly enhances the healing process, much like the medications doctors may use in bandages.

The best advantage of PRP treatment for wound healing is that the serum is made from the patient's blood and is unlikely to have any side effects. In addition, the scar tissue that forms in the wound has a reduced blood supply due to its harder structure. PRP can stimulate the formation of new blood vessels so that healing continues immediately.

The positive aspects of PRP therapy for wound healing

Doctors can use PRP therapy to heal different types of wounds as they repair two tissues and fight infections.

  • PRP helps heal acute or chronic diabetic wounds. Given that at least 15% of diabetics suffer from foot ulcers at some point, PRP treatments can help repair them.
  • PRP helps healing after surgery, especially in diabetic or elderly patients with ineffective repair skills. Some patients may have compromised immunity to a particular disease and PRP can help.
  • PRP facilitates recovery with minimal risk of infection due to the presence of leukocytes or white blood cells in the serum.
  • Repairing tissue with PRP causes patients less pain and discomfort due to the rapid healing process. As a result, they need less pain medication.
  • PRP helps heal wounds with the least amount of scarring. Receiving PRP reduces the need for blood transfusions.
  • PRP treatment for wound care can shorten the patient's hospital stay after surgery, resulting in more economical treatments.
  • The scar tissue formed after PRP treatment for wound healing is more flexible, so patients have better movement.
  • The PRP serum is easy to prepare and can be ready in 30 minutes. Doctors can prepare plasma during surgery or while the wound is being cleaned.
  • PRP can be used in open heart surgery, plastic surgery, back surgery and orthopaedic surgery to help fractures heal.

PRP treatment for wound healing is very effective in helping patients recover. If you are going to have surgery or have wounds, you should talk to your doctor about PRP treatment.
