Important: needle length and actual penetration depth are not identical. Skin area, skin thickness, applied pressure and technique affect how deeply the needles actually enter. Needle length alone therefore does not establish a specific effect or indication.

What is a dermaroller – and what does mesoroller mean?

A dermaroller consists of a handle and a rotating drum fitted with fine needles. When it is rolled manually, the needles repeatedly contact the skin. It requires no motor and therefore differs technically from an electrically powered microneedling pen.

The terms dermaroller, mesoroller and microneedling roller are often used for the same basic design. The name alone, however, does not define the needle length, intended purpose or regulatory status of a specific product.

Important distinction: a mesoroller is not injection mesotherapy. The roller has no syringe and does not inject any liquid.

How does a dermaroller work?

As the roller moves across the skin, the needles create numerous pinpoint micro-injuries or microchannels. This mechanical process is part of microneedling and is described in the medical literature as percutaneous collagen induction.[1] The term describes the mechanism studied in the literature and is not a performance claim for a specific dermaroller.

For product selection, it is important to distinguish needle length from actual penetration depth. Skin yields under pressure and the needles do not enter vertically in the same way as a stamping device. The depth reached can therefore differ from the nominal needle length.

Side effects, risks and exclusion criteria

Microneedling temporarily breaches the skin barrier. The literature describes the following common temporary reactions and possible complications, among others.[1]
