Laboratory equipment for PRP, PRF and professional sample preparation

Reproducible workflows require the centrifuge, rotor, tube and protocol to be technically compatible. This category contains selected equipment and practice furniture for professional users handling small and medium sample volumes.

Technical selection

Maximum speed is not the deciding factor

A centrifuge is not a universal solution for every PRP or PRF process. Relevant factors include relative centrifugal force, effective rotor radius, rotor design, tube holder dimensions and the intended purpose of the specific device.

RCF, not RPM alone

RPM describes rotational speed. RCF, expressed as × g, describes the relative centrifugal force acting on the sample. The same RPM can produce a different RCF when the rotor radius changes.

Rotor and tube

Fixed-angle and swing-out rotors guide tubes differently during the run. Diameter, length, volume and any required adapters must match the rotor.

Check intended purpose

A medical device, an IVD and general laboratory equipment are not legally interchangeable categories. Manufacturer information, labelling and intended use must be checked for each product.

Workflow

Four checks before the first run

01

Define the protocol

Take the target RCF, run time and required tube type from the relevant manufacturer documentation.

02

Confirm compatibility

Check tube dimensions, rotor positions and adapters before use.

03

Transfer parameters

Set RCF directly or calculate the corresponding RPM from the effective rotor radius.

04

Document the process

Record the device, rotor, time, RCF and any batch-specific requirements in a traceable form.

Selection guide

What to check when selecting laboratory equipment

Do not compare devices using a single maximum value. Several factors matter in daily practice:

adjustable RCF and speed range
rotor type and effective rotor radius
number, dimensions and volume of tube positions
available adapters and inserts
imbalance detection and lid locking
operation, noise level and cleaning options
intended purpose, labelling and manufacturer documentation
Category focus

Centrifuges and functional practice equipment

The current focus of this category is on compact benchtop centrifuges and supplementary equipment for an organised, safe workstation.

Common questions

Understanding laboratory equipment for PRP and PRF

What is the difference between RPM and RCF?

RPM states the rotor speed per minute. RCF describes the relative centrifugal force at the sample and also accounts for rotor radius. RCF is therefore usually the more reliable value when transferring a protocol.

Can every centrifuge be used for PRP or PRF?

No. The device must match the tube, required RCF range and intended process. The manufacturer’s stated intended purpose must also be observed.

Why does rotor type matter?

Fixed-angle rotors keep tubes at a fixed angle, while swing-out rotors move into a horizontal position during the run. This affects sedimentation path and layer formation.

How is compatibility checked?

At minimum, compare tube dimensions, fill volume, rotor holder, adapters, permissible load, required RCF and run time. Where doubt remains, consult the documentation for both products.
