PRP in gynaecology - Vaginal rejuvenation

The menopause and the years after can be a stressful time for almost every woman. During the years of sexual maturity, women face a number of problems, such as menstrual cramps, pregnancy and childbirth. And then come the menopause and the menopausal years.

Decreasing hormones like estrogen and progesterone can have several other side effects. Fortunately, PRP for vaginal rejuvenation can help reverse some of the symptoms. The treatment allows women to regain their confidence, feel feminine again and live a more normal life.

What is PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma)?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an innovative treatment to stimulate cell regeneration, neovascularisation and healthy cell formation.

Whole blood is processed into platelet-rich plasma (PRP). In a natural process, the body responds to the PRP injections by releasing growth factors that stimulate the production of new collagen and elastin.

The secret of this treatment is platelets. Platelets are important for many functions in the body, especially for the mucous membranes or the skin.

Advantages of PRP:

  • It promotes tissue regeneration and rejuvenation.
  • Increases collagen production.
  • It acts as a "biological glue" that promotes tissue healing.
  • Induces cell differentiation.
  • It is non-allergenic.

PRP therapy is ideal for women who want to enjoy younger skin or healthier mucous membranes naturally at any age.

A reduction in oestrogen levels can have various effects

Ageing and multiple vaginal deliveries can cause the tissues in the vagina to become flaccid.  Although these are normal effects, a decrease in estrogen levels can lead to other types of problems. Effects such as:

  • Vaginal dryness
  • Irritation, burning and itching in the area
  • More efficient growth of pubic hair
  • Inflammation and sores in the vagina make sex painful
  • Wear and tear of the fat under the skin in the surrounding areas makes the body look like it is ageing
  • Abnormal discharge and minor damage to the vagina are other common complaints

Vaginal rejuvenation through PRP treatment

PRP for vaginal rejuvenation is a treatment that uses a blood sample to create a specific blood plasma. This plasma contains a concentration of growth factors, stem cells and other healing elements that can restore firm skin. By injecting the serum into the walls of the vagina, doctors can reverse the sagging of the tissue. This is because PRP can stimulate the growth of the collagen and elastin layer under the skin. Patients talked about how they notice firmness and better sensitivity so they can enjoy a relationship again.

PRP treatment can help:

  • restore the integrity of the mucosal surface of the vagina and cervix
  • Establish a regular menstrual cycle
  • improve muscle tone in the pelvic floor
  • heal skin tears and fissures in the vaginal area
  • Eliminate unpleasant sensations in the vaginal area during sexual intercourse.
  • Reduce the risk of new disease
  • Reduce post-surgical scars and stretch marks

PRP treatments combined with autologous fat injections

PRP for vaginal rejuvenation, in combination with autologous fat injections, can restore tissue along with the youthful appearance of the genitals. Doctors at the National Centre for Biotechnology Information conducted a case study of a 67-year-old woman. Here's how it went:

  • After taking a 36 cm3 sample of abdominal fat using local infiltration methods, the doctors prepared it for injection.
  • Laboratory technicians extracted 30 ml of blood from the patient's forearm. Using PRP kits and centrifugal methods, they generated 4 ml of PRP serum.
  • After mixing the autologous fat and PRP serum, the doctors prepared 1 ml syringes.
  • Using a fine needle, the serum was carefully inserted into various sites on the outer regions of the genitals.
  • The patient returned for examination within the next 12 months. She reported that the irritation and white blotchy skin she had experienced over the previous five years had all disappeared and had not returned. The pictures before and after the procedure showed that the area was plumper and looked younger and rejuvenated.

PRP treatments for the rejuvenation of the ovaries

Some women experience not having enough eggs to get pregnant naturally. This may be due to early menopause , advanced maternal age or low ovarian reserve (egg supply). In the past, egg donation was the only way to experience the joys of pregnancy and parenthood, but now we have another option. It is PRP to rejuvenate the ovaries.

Under normal circumstances, a woman's ovaries cannot develop new eggs. In fact, she is born with all the eggs she will ever have. These eggs lose quality and quantity as she ages. However, research suggests that PRP (platelet-rich plasma) can help a woman produce more eggs. In addition, this technique can also be used to improve the thin lining of the uterus (endometrium).

Ovarian PRP procedure

The ovarian platelet plasma (PRP) rejuvenation process involves two steps: first, the patient's platelet plasma must be prepared; the process itself takes less than an hour; to prepare the plasma from the patient, the blood must first be drawn into the PRP tubes with a needle.

The blood sample is put into a special PRP centrifuge where it is separated into white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets.

This process is called centrifugation.

In the second step, the processed plasma is injected directly into the patient's ovary using an ultrasound-guided transvaginal needle. The technique used also called transvaginal puncture is similar to egg retrieval in in vitro fertilization.

Unlike other PRP injection methods, this method is less invasive, generally safer and has a shorter recovery time and is more comfortable.

Some doctors also use laparoscopy to inject the plasma.

High Volume Intrauterine PRP

During the large volume intrauterine PRP procedure, 8-10 ml of PRP is slowly injected into the uterus using the SHG catheter (with balloon). During this procedure, the PRP flows out of the uterus through the fallopian tubes and bathes the ovaries in plasma. After completion of the infusion procedure, the patient rests for 10 minutes with the catheter in place.

What can I expect after the PRP treatment?

There are minimal side effects or complications from PRP treatments. However, there may be swelling, redness and in rare cases slight bruising.

Once this subsides, only a very slight change is visible at first. In the following weeks, the platelets stimulate growth factors, which contributes to more collagen growth.
