What does biorevitalization mean?
In aesthetic practice, the term usually refers to superficial or intradermal injection procedures intended to address hydration, texture or overall skin quality. Non-cross-linked or lightly cross-linked hyaluronic acid is often used, sometimes with additional ingredients. Results from one formulation cannot automatically be transferred to every product marketed as biorevitalization.
What is PRP?
PRP means platelet-rich plasma. It is prepared from the patient's own blood by centrifugation. The resulting plasma fraction has a modified platelet concentration. PRP is not a single standardized product: collection system, anticoagulant, centrifugation, leukocyte content and activation can alter its composition.
Three ways to combine the procedures
They may be used at separate appointments, during the same appointment with separate syringes, or in a dedicated combination system. These approaches are not equivalent. A combined treatment plan does not automatically mean that PRP and hyaluronic acid are mixed.
Can PRP be mixed with any hyaluronic acid?
No. Hyaluronic acid products differ in concentration, molecular weight, cross-linking, viscosity, buffer, additives and intended injection depth. PRP also varies by preparation method. Joint preparation should only be considered when the specific system is designed and documented for it.
Why is the combination being studied?
Hyaluronic acid binds water and affects the physical properties of the extracellular matrix. Activated platelets in PRP can release signaling proteins. This creates a plausible hypothesis that both approaches might complement each other. Biological plausibility, however, is not proof of clinical superiority.
What do current studies show?
Small clinical studies using defined PRP–hyaluronic acid systems have reported changes in individual parameters such as hydration, firmness or elasticity. Findings are product-specific and limited by small samples, heterogeneous protocols and sometimes absent control groups. Evidence is insufficient for broad claims about wrinkle removal, tightening or lasting effects.
Is the combination better than PRP alone?
There is no general answer. Individual studies suggest a possible additional benefit for selected outcomes, but larger independent trials with standardized PRP protocols, identical HA formulations, objective endpoints and longer follow-up are still needed.
Risks and adverse effects
Autolog does not mean risk-free. Temporary pain, redness, swelling, bruising, papules and local reactions may occur. Injection procedures also carry risks of infection, inflammatory reactions and, rarely, vascular complications. Reactions to anticoagulants, local anaesthetics or ingredients of the biorevitalization product cannot be excluded.
When is particular caution required?
Individual assessment is especially important in active skin infection, coagulation disorders, abnormal platelet count or function, anticoagulant medication, known intolerance, serious systemic disease, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Product instructions and medical evaluation remain decisive.
What does this mean in practice?
Treatment goal, region, product status, preparation method, injection plane and complication management must be defined beforehand. Results from dedicated combination systems must not be transferred to improvised mixtures. Treatment belongs in the hands of appropriately qualified professionals.
