What is hypochlorous acid?
A simple compound of hydrogen, oxygen and chlorine (HOCl). It is only moderately stable in water and is therefore supplied in a high-purity solution adjusted to an acidic range. In this product it is an ingredient of a cosmetic formula; prpmed does not make claims about effects against microorganisms.
Is Skin Purifier a disinfectant?
No. It is placed on the market as a cosmetic product under Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009. A product intended to kill or inhibit microorganisms would be a biocidal product under Regulation (EU) No 528/2012 and would require the corresponding authorisation. Such claims are not made here.
Why is pH so important?
Because it determines which form of the compound predominates. Below pH 6 it is almost entirely present as hypochlorous acid; above the pKa value of 7.54 the hypochlorite ion predominates – the form familiar from alkaline chlorine bleach.
