Plasma growth factors in cerebral palsy

PRP therapy for patients with cerebral palsy

Platelet-rich plasma is now a common medical technique known as regenerative medicine. By activating and differentiating energy cells, different growth factors are produced depending on the cell fraction, which remain in the final product both locally and systematically.

PRP can repair brain cells by lowering swelling, developing brain collagen and improving blood supply for a better quality of life.

Cerebral palsy

Cerebral palsy is a group of disorders that affect a person's ability to move and maintain balance and posture. Cerebral palsy is the most common motor disability in childhood.  Paralysis means weakness or difficulty in using muscles. Cerebral palsy is caused by abnormal brain development or impaired brain development that affects people's ability to control muscles.

The symptoms of cerebral palsy vary from person to person. Patients with severe cerebral palsy may need walking aids and require lifelong care.

On the other hand, patients with mild cerebral palsy may feel somewhat unwell but may not need much help.

Cerebral palsy does not get worse over time, although the exact symptoms may change over a lifetime.

Many also have related conditions such as mental retardation, seizures, vision, hearing or speech problems, spinal changes (such as scoliosis) or joint problems (such as contractures).

PRP treatments for cerebral palsy

Today, the use of platelet-rich plasma to treat various medical and cosmetic problems has become part of the branch of medicine called regenerative medicine.

The PRP serum is effective for tissue regeneration. This includes tendons, muscles, ligaments, cartilage and even bones.

Because PRP can promote the growth of new nerves, doctors have now successfully used PRP to treat cerebral palsy.

Case studies show that PRP treatments for cerebral palsy work

When doctors used PRP therapy on patients, they found that the growth factors in the serum could repair the neurons and nervous system. The treatment could also help heal brain injuries so that it could better control muscles and nerves. Here are some of the positive effects the neurologists found:

  • Significant improvement in cognitive skills, such as better memory, ability to perform advanced tasks and learn more skills
  • such as memory,
  • ability to perform complex tasks
  • a better understanding of language
  • the ability to form and speak two- or three-syllable words
  • the ability to eat solid food
  • more control over the limbs
  • better coordination of movement
  • the ability to indicate, fix and track moving objects

Although most clinical trials for both stem cell therapy and platelet-rich plasma injection therapy are still ongoing, positive results are continuously being achieved for people who are suitable for this therapy. It is important to note that not everyone responds equally to treatment.

Effectiveness of PRP treatments for cerebral palsy has been proven

To test the results, the doctors performed positron emission tomography (PET) scans of the patient's brain before starting the treatment. Further scans were performed at intervals of 24 hours, 3 months and 6 months after the PRP treatments for cerebral palsy.

The results showed development of the cerebral cortex or outer layer of the brain of condensed grey tissue. During the neuroradiological examination, the doctors found that the brain metabolised glucose more efficiently.

This factor is a clear indication of improved neurons or brain cells.

Although most clinical trials for both stem cell therapy and platelet-rich plasma injection therapy are still being conducted, positive results are continually being obtained for people who are suitable for this therapy. It is important to remember that not everyone will respond to the therapy in the same way.
